This Isn't Your Mama's Jazzercise

I already know what you’re thinking. The first thing that probably pops into your mind when you hear Jazzercise are images of women from the 1980s working out in neon leotards and leg warmers. Trust me, that was the first thing I thought of when Jazzercise invited me to try one of their classes.

I was a little apprehensive about attending a class. My biggest fear was that I’d be trapped in a fitness studio for an hour and forced to workout to tons of 80’s music. Jazzercise has been around since 1969 and was incredibly popular in the 1980s. My mom thought it was the hottest thing since sliced bread back when I was a baby.

My fears were alleviated from the moment I walked into class. I was immediately greeted by Bonnie who’s the Owner and a Certified Instructor at the Plano location. She was extremely friendly and welcomed me with open arms. I also had the pleasure of meeting other instructors and Plano staff. Everyone was super nice and reassured me to just have fun. I was a little worried that I wouldn’t pick up the moves and I’d look like a total klutz!

The Workout

My heart started racing as soon as class began. It was workout time! Mel was our instructor and she had tons of great energy.

The class started with a warmup and I started to get tired a few minutes in. After the warm up, we rolled right into the dance moves. They were easy to pick up and the moves were really fun. I have to give a shout out to all the women who were in my class, they’ve got the moves like Jagger!

The Moves

Putting in Werk!

The hour-long Dance Mixx class is a fusion of hip hop dance, kickboxing, and pilates moves set to Top 40 dance music. It works out 3 major muscle groups for a full body workout. I had a blast doing the moves and the music selection was great! We even did some sets to Janet Jackson and Ciara! After about 35-40 minutes of cardio, weight lifting was incorporated into the routine.

Towards the end of class, we did some mat work. The workout was intense but so much fun. I really love that the class wasn’t just focused on cardio. The weight training and mat exercise added another awesome component.

Final Thoughts

I had so much fun at Jazzercise and I would totally do it again! Jazzercise has a diverse mix of classes which makes it easy to switch up your fitness routine. You can visit their website to find class times and schedules in your area. Special thanks to all the wonderful ladies at the Plano location for being so warm and welcoming! You ladies are the best!
